The region which runs through the axis Chaves - Vila Pouca de Aguiar - Vila Real is characterized by cool winters and mild summers, high temperature variations that result in somewhat mild climate to continental, heavy precipitation in winter and significant occurence of dew and frost. In higher areas, from 800 meters, its expected the occurrence of snowfall.
During winter the temperature drops more than in the cities and beaches of the coast, without having to reach the severe colds of Barroso and Serra do Marão. During the summer, the temperature rises more than the coast; however there are no sweltering summers as in Douro. Between December and January the temperature varies between -6ºC and 8ºC, from March to June is between 10ºC and 20ºC. According to the Environment Atlas, the daily temperature in the region varies between 7,5ºC and 15ºC.
For precipitation, the average values vary between 700mm and 1200mm. The region of Chaves is on the threshold between the Atlantic and continental influence, characterized by significant temperatur ranges and average rainfall.
